Blue Stars shine at home to top Youth Development League

Horsham Blue Star Harriers won the latest round and their home meeting at Broadbridge Heath in the Youth Development League for the under-13 and under-15 age groups.

The home side scoring 517 points for top spot ahead of Chichester in second (499 points), Woking in third(456 points), Bournemouth in fourth (418 points), Reigate Priory in fifth (360 points) and Havant in sixth (234 points).

This result sees the club move back to head the table and with just one fixture to go at Woking next month they look in good a position for promotion.

In the under-15 boys’ events, Leo Walker had a great day winning his three events, firstly taking the hammer with a throw of 25.33m, then 34.72m to win the discus and sealed his day by winning the shot putt with a personal best of 10.90m. Finn Gregson won the B string shot with 6.70m.

There was a good run by Ashley Williams in the 1,500m, where his strong finish saw him come from fourth to first in the finishing straight to win in 4min 58.8ssec, a new personal best.

In the high jump, Tom Page leapt 1.50m to take second place.

The under-13 boys scored well with Seb Wallace and Matthew O’Dwyer teaming up in the 100m, 200m and long jump and they gained maximum points. Wallace won the A string 100m in 13.2sec, with O’Dwyer winning the B string in 13.3.

The 200m saw the roles reversed, with O’Dwyer running 26.8 to win the A race and Wallace winning the B race with 27.0. In the long jump, Wallace leapt 4.66m to win the A event and O’Dwyer 4.58m to win the B string.

The high jump provided another double win, with Hari Brogan clearing 1.38m to win the A string and Callum Palmer leaping 1.35m to take the B string. The latter also ran in the 75m hurdles where his time of 15.1 took second place, clubmate Craig Harris won the B race in 15.3.

The under-15 girls’ events saw Ella Hannyngton win the high jump with a clearance of 1.51m, with Abigail McPherson clearing 1.35m to win the B string.

The former took second place in both the 100m, where she ran 13.1 and the 75m hurdles (12.3).

Anna Summerfield won the pole vault with a new personal best clearance of 2.30m, whilst Rania Hyde achieved second places in the shot putt with a throw of 8.83m and the B string 75m hurdles (12.9). The B race of the 100m saw Colette Tierney run 14.2 for second place.

There were good performances in the under-13 girls’ age group with Cleo Tomlinson winning the long jump with a leap of 4.81m, having earlier won the high jump with 1.45m, and the B string 70m hurdles in 11.6.

The A string hurdles was won by Ruby Jerges in 11.8, whilst Jasmine Belshaw leapt 3.71m to win the B string long jump, having won the B races in both the 75m (11.0) and 150m (21.7).

Maisie Walker took the B string high jump with 1.15m. Ruby Walker and Emily Hutchinson teamed up in the shot and both gained second places, throwing 6.84m and 5.85m respectively.

The 4x100m relays again provided good points, with the under-13 team of Walker, Hutchinson, Belshaw and Tomlinson coming home comfortable winners in 57.1. The boys’ team of Palmer, Wallace, Harris and O’Dwyer had to settle for second spot running 54.7.

Under-15 girls - McPherson, Summerfield, Hyde and Hannyngton just prevailed in their race, running 53.2, boys Tom Page, Nathan Clarke, Finn Gregson and Adam West finished third in 52.7.
