However, they bounced back on Saturday and secured another win.

The victory sees them move eight points clear at the top of the table with just three games of the campaign to go.

Bognor started brightly with crisp passing through the midfield trio of Charlotte Cox, Cita Haines and Theresa Cooper.

Karen Harmer made some telling runs on the right, penetrating the Brighton baseline.

The visitor’s stepped up their work rate and it quickly became obvious that they had a very effective attacking formation which stretched the abilities of Debbie Cox, Sue Perry and Helen Arnold.

It was Brighton who took the lead on ten minutes, though, against the run of play.

Bognor’s response was almost immediate as Charlotte Cox dribbled her way through the visitors defence, before crashing the ball into the net.

Despite conceded, Brighton continued to attack and were causing the home side some problems.

Nadia Muncey worked tirelessly chasing down the crisp Brighton passing and continually made herself available on the left.

Cita Haines, in her first game back since having baby, gradually worked her way back to provide a superb alternative attack support for Charlotte Cox.

Bognor took the lead for the first time in the contest as Charlotte Cox notched her second just before the interval.

Theresa Cooper forced the ball upfield and was unlucky on a couple of occasions to see shots cleared.

Sara Coulson and June Rogers also provided a strong presence on the left which disrupted the Brighton balance.

Charlotte Cox then completed her hat-trick midway through the second period to give Bognor a 3-1 lead.

Haines worked an opening, before slipping a pass through to the right and Cox threw herself full length at it to thrash an unstoppable shot past the keeper.

Brighton continued to apply the pressure in the closing stages of the match but failed to find the net after some fine saves from Lily Morris.

The home side then made sure of the victory.

Charlotte Cox got her name on the scoresheet once again.
