Bowlers roll up in good numbers

The winners and runners-up in the Hastings Open Bowls Tournament's Charity Triples Competition at White Rock Bowling Club

It was wonderful entertainment for the many spectators on a warm and very sunny autumn day at the White Rock Bowling Club.

As a charity day it was a great success, and although the winners would only receive a trophy and a bottle of wine, they played as though the Ryder Cup was at stake.

The beneficiary this year was Dragonflies, a bereavement counselling service for young people sponsored by the Fellowship of St Nicholas.

As a response to the generosity of the players and spectators in the excellent raffle, a cheque for £500 was presented to Molly Green, the founder and president of the charity, which is helping more and more young people every year.

The competition was won by the Hellingly team of Neville Grover, supported by Messrs Robinson and Beal with a positive score of 26 over the two matches.

There was a dilemma over the runners-up as two teams had identical scores of plus 24 and the prizes were therefore shared between the White Rock team of Tony Letchford, Joyce Cox and Tony Cox, and the West Hoathly team of J. Stephens, K. Woodman and A. Campbell.

The chairman said he had a lot of people to thank; Pat Warner and the ladies who provided food all day, Martin and the bar staff, Maureen Charlesworth and Audrey Ward with the raffle and especially Simon Moore, the competition secretary for the smooth running of the tournament.

Grateful thanks were also given to Peter Mitchell, of Top Flight Supplies, who donated and engraved the trophies, and all who provided raffle prizes.
