COTSWOLD villager Richard Coates, 54, fulfils his 20-year-old ambition of playing bowls in the EBA Finals at Worthing.

The Nailsworth Mills man lost both hands in a Canadian industrial accident in 1967, then learned to weld in order to design and make replacements for any purpose, including playing golf off 14 and making snooker breaks of up to 50.

The EBA Finals also included new record youngest qualifiers Darren Allsopp (South Derbyshire Miners Welfare), 13, and Lee Welsford (Belvedere, Huntingdonshire) just recently 14.

Malcolm Lock has become our only local county champion in bowls.

The Field Place lead won the Sussex Unbadged Singles title at Saffrons on Saturday in a dramatic finish against Eric Pettingel of Popes Mead, Crawley.
