Bowls: Arun are doing all-Wight in the Egham Trophy

Arun played exceptionally well to beat the Isle of Wight in the third round of the national Egham Trophy 83-76.

In the next round Arun will play Eastbourne in the Sussex area zone final.

SHORT MAT

West Sussex B entertained East Sussex in a friendly.

They started well, winning three of the four games in the first session and sharing the games in the second for a 10-6 lead at lunch.

In the afternoon they stepped up a gear losing only one of the eight games and taking all the bonus points for a win by 32-8 and 230 shots to 111.

In the singles Bognor’s Freddie Kaucher lost 16-10 and won 16-9. In the pairs Crablands’ Joyce Abel won 16-9 and 19-7 while Bognor’s Betty Williams won 28-3 and lost 12-8. In the triples Crablands’ Martin Hunt and Les Dray won 10-5 and 15-4.

Crablands Cormorants beat Ardingly 40-38 to gain four valuable league points.

Crablands Bitterns played their return match against Crablands Auks and gained four points to the Auks’ two with a 42-31 win.

Goodwoods Greens suffered mixed fortunes when they visited Upper Beeding for a league match, losing 4-2.

They scraped a 21-20 win on mat one thanks to E Jones, E Cook, R Jalley and B Mills (skip) after trailing 16-5 at the halfway stage and winning eight of the last ten ends.

On mat two, J Simmons, B Williams, M Steel and B Jones (skip) didn’t win a shot until end 11. Although they improved in the second half, there was too much to make up and they lost 26-9 for an overall score of 46-30.

Goodwoods visited Arundel for a friendly but never got to grips with ‘mat on mat’.

G Roope, J Harbut, B Williams and D Lovell (skip) lost 27-7 and J Hayter, M Goodland, S Hayter and B Goodland (skip) lost 28-6.

The club held their annual singles competitions. After a gruelling day’s bowls, the ladies’ competition was won by Rose Jalley, with Janet Hanson runner-up. In the gents’ battle, Brian Mills beat Freddie Kaucher for the title.

Last week’s report of Bognor Goodwoods’ win against Lavant Reds should have referred to Goodwood Greens, not Silver.

LAVANT

Lavant Green had success at Walberton. A close game on Bill Cooper’s mat brought a win by six shots. A slow start on Tony Bleach’s mat saw them 5-0 down. They improved but could not get the shots back and lost by five shots.

However, the match shot count of 35-34 earned them the bonus points. The friendly mat saw John Heasman’s team win by 23 shots.

Lavant Red found no joy against Bognor Goodwoods Green. Peter Winter’s mat saw low scores from both teams, Red losing the game by nine shots.

It was a similar tale on Peter Whale’s mat, Red losing by six shots. On the friendly mat, Peter Massey’s team enjoyed a good win.

Fittleworth won one mat and lost one but lost 44-34 overall to Ashington, who took four points to Fittleworth’s two.
