Bowls: Arun’s open house attracts new faces

Arun entertained Wey Valley and the game and company was enjoyed by all.

Arun hosted a home friendly and West Surrey found it hard to cope with Arun’s fast rinks. Arun won on four of the six rinks.

Arun 177 The Piscatorials 87

Arun hosted The Piscatorials – a charitable organisation that was started in 1947 between Smithfield Meat Market and Billingsgate Fish Market.

These days the team comes from all over London and the south-east. The Piscatorials raise money for projects with a raffle at the end of the bowling.

A good day was had by all and there was a hotshot by Arun on rink six.

COUNTY SCENE

West Sussex’s Premier and A teams were both in action in the inter-county championship.

The Premier team opened their season with a home match against Kent. They started slowly, sharing the points in the first session and winning only one game in the third session to trail 10-6 at lunch.

They upped their game in the afternoon, taking three wins in the third session and two wins and a draw in the final session. With bonus points in the pairs and fours West Sussex ended up winners of a very close and hard-fought contest by 21-19, a very satisfactory opening to their season.

In the singles The Martlets’ Mel Lillywhite won 11-10 and 11-9 while Southbourne’s Robin Armstrong lost 16-6 and 16-6. In the pairs Bognor’s Roger Brown with The Martlets’ Marc Lancaster lost 18-6 and won 13-12 while The Martlets’ combination of Chris Blackman and Jack Rollings won 21-5 and 15-14.

In the triples Crablands Joyce Abel with Lavant’s Peter Winter and Peter Whale lost 12-10 and 14-8. In the fours the Southbourne combination of Audrey Bull, Rodney Bull, Dave Alner and Antony Bull lost 12-4 and won 9-8.

The A team entertained East Sussex looking to follow up their away win at East Sussex in the first match of the season.

They started slowly taking three points in the first session and five in the second to be level at 8-8 at lunch. Like the Premier team they upped their game in the afternoon, taking seven out of eight points in the third session and six in the final session, together with the bonus points in all four disciplines for a 29-11 victory.

In the singles The Martlets’ Freddie Kaucher drew 11-11 and won 19-11. In the pairs Lavant’s John Simms lost 12-10 and drew 14-14 while Southbourne’s Karen Alner lost 14-11 and won 22-4.

In the triples Bognor’s Eric and Brenda Jones won 15-6 and 16-4. In the fours Southbourne’s John Hardy with Crablands’ Martin Hunt and Bognor’s Brian Mills won 13-6 and 19-8 while The Martlets’ Barrie Fitch with Infinity’s Denise Kirby and Southbourne’s Dave Walter lost 10-8 and won 12-11.

CRABLANDS

TWO Crablands teams met in a close-fought encounter. The Bitterns beat the Cormorants 37-34.

MIDHURST EAGLES

The Eagles played Horley Falcons in the league knockouts with one mat coming out on top 18-17 but the other mat winning 33-12.

Scores: B Osbourne,D Berry, B Fallows, T Berry won 33-12; S Glazebrook, S Weeks, L Mercer, R Weeks won 18-17.

Against Nyetimber Bears, the Eagles won on one mat and lost on one -going down 40-35 and picking up just two points.

Scores: B Osbourne, D Berry, B Fallows, T Berry lost 27-17; A Knight, S Tait, L Mercer, R Weeks won 18-13.

SOUTHBOURNE

Southbourne Rovers 43 Walberton 29

Southbourne Rovers had a good win at home in south-west zone division two of the West Sussex Winter League against Walberton. Each team won on one mat and Southbourne Rovers won overall by 14 shots to earn four points.

Scores: Mary Thornton, Colin Bulbeck, Malcolm Keane & Alan Williams (s) won 30-10; John Staker, Joan Frost, Margaret Odell & Pete Jasinski (s) lost 19-13.

Audrey Bull from Southbourne BC has been awarded her West Sussex (WSCSMBA) badge. County badges are awarded on completion of eight matches for any of the county representative teams. She has played seven of her matches for the Sussex A team and her latest match was for the County Premier team.

DONNINGTON

Donnington celebrated their 25th anniversary at the Goodwood Restaurant, Chichester College. Claire Wilding and the students provided a lovely meal.

Club chairwoman Maggie Maggs gave a short speech about the 25 years of the club and gave the toast. A total of 36 people attended including five of the original members.

They are looking forward to another enjoyable season’s bowling of roll-ups, internal competitions and friendly matches.

OUTDOOR SCENE

MIDDLETON

Middleton Bowls Club held their prizegiving dinner with a record turnout at Middleton Sports Club.

The bowlers and their partners were treated to an upbeat, fun-filled speech by club captain Peter Lush who thanked all those members who contributed in innumerable ways to a successful running of the club during the past season.

Club president John Graham presented trophies to the 2015 champions of the club’s knockout competitions.
