Bowls: Jersey girls are no match for Arun

Arun Ladies head this week's indoor bowls round-up, and there are reports from around the West Sussex short mat clubs as well.

Arun hosted a touring team from Jersey and had a fine win.

The Piscatorials are a group of bowlers who do good deeds for various charities and are always welcome visitors to the Arun club.

In this annual six-rink mixed fixture, Arun’s good run came to an end as they won on only one rink.

SHORT MAT

The West Sussex Premier team visited Surrey looking to move top of the table. In the first session they won two and lost two but they improved in the second session, winning three and drawing one to lead 11-5.

In the afternoon they won three games in the third session and all four in the final one for a very satisfying overall win by 31-9 and 204-137 in shots.

West Sussex move to the top of the table to lead by a point.

In the singles The Martlets’ Marc Lancaster lost 16-13 and won 14-9. In the pairs Lavant’s Peter Whale with Chanctonbury’s Jim Noton lost 13-5 and won 20-3 while in the other pair Lavant’s Peter Winter won 13-8 and lost 24-5.

In the triples, Infinity’s Chris Page and Ben Haulkham with The Martlets’ Jack Rolling drew 10-10 and won 13-5. In the fours Infinity’s Matt Allen won 13-4 and 17-9 whilst the Martlets’ Malcolm Rollings won 10-2 and 11-5.

West Sussex A visited Hampshire and struggled on a slower surface. They took three points in the first session and four in the second to be 9-7 down at lunch.

In the third session they took five points but failed to pick up either set of shot bonus points to be 16-12 behind with one session remaining. They failed to win any games in the final session, picking up the two bonus points in the triples for a final defeat by 26-14 and 175-148.

In the pairs Bognor’s Eric and Brenda Jones drew 11-11 and lost 16-4. In the triples Crablands’ Joyce Abel with The Martlets’ Barrie Fitch drew 9-9 and lost 12-9 while the Bognor combination of Betty Williams, Marlene Steel and Brian Mills won 13-5 and lost 9-7.

In the fours Lavant’s John Simms and Rob Peirce lost 8-5 and 8-6. West Sussex still lie second in the table.

BOGNOR GOODWOODS

Both Bognor Goodwoods teams have opened their winter league campaigns - Greens with a 5-1 defeat to Chanctonbury Foxes and Silvers with a 6-0 victory over Crabland Auks.

For the Greens, their team of Derek Fair,,Edna Cook ,Eric Jones and Brian Mills (skip) never appeared to put their opponents in any danger, although single-shot wins predominated. Greens lost 19-12.

On the other mat, Mary Fair, Betty Williams, Marlene Steel and Brenda Jones (skip) were three in front going in to the last end, but could not stop Foxes taking three shots to force a tie at 20-20, leaving the overall score 39-32.

Silvers won comfortably on both mats. Margaret Williams, Daniel Lovell, Marion Goodland and Brian Goodland (skip) were trailing for the first seven ends but turned things around with the help of two fives and a four to finish 29-13 up.

Grace Roope, Geoff King, Brian Williams and Janet Hanson (skip) finished 22-11 victors for six points and an overall score of 51-24.

But Bognor Silvers were given a shock following their victory - Auks withdrew from the league, and their results were expunged from the records.

Bognor’s Brenda Jones won her second cap for England ladies when the team travelled to Belfast for a return fixture against the Irish. Brenda skipped a rink who won all four of their matches and played in another  four games, winning another two matches.

Bognor Goodwoods Reds had a tense game in the knockout cup when they visited Horley. There was a victory for each side on the two mats - with a seven-shot margin on each.

The first extra end failed to separate the teams with each side taking a one-shot victory. Horley took the second play-off with another single shot win, this time on both mats to take it 39-37.

Fittleworth enjoyed a 59-30 league win over Midhurst Eagles but lost the friendly.

CRABLANDS

Crablands Auks have had to withdraw from the league because of five members not renewing membership and difficulty in finding replacements.

Crablands Puffins and Sandpipers played first-round knockout cup games.

The Sandpipers lost 62-16 to Arundel.

The Puffins won on both mats to beat Ardingly 46-28.

LAVANT

The County KO rounds have started and Lavant A hosted Chanctonbury for their first match.

Peter Whale’s mat kept a point or so ahead but it was 12-12 after 14 ends. They took the next four ends to be ten shots up and won by eight shots.

Peter Winter’s mat kept a good start going, scoring steadily winning their game by nine shots. The final score was 49-32.

Hunston played a ‘home’ match away at Fittleworth and lost by two shots.
