Bowls trio roll up for England

Through winning the Bowls England Men’s National Triples Championship last August, Glen Newton, Nick Wingfield and Shaun Godfrey qualified

to perform in the colours of their country.

It is a six-team tournament, where the men will do battle against Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey.

The Hastings-based trio take on Scotland in the first round tomorrow (Thursday), with a win seeing them face the host nation in the

semi-finals later that day.

Should they reach the final, it will take place the following morning at 9am, though skip Godfrey admits they don’t know what to expect from

their opposition.

“We’re going there with a clear head,” Godfrey said. “We’re focused and not worrying about who the opposition are and what they can do.”

The three men have continued playing together all season and have been the ‘team to beat’ since their national success last summer.

Victory on Irish soil would see them qualify for the European Championships in Spain in September, and winning there would see progression to the world event in New Zealand two months later.

“We’re not thinking too far ahead though,” added Wingfield. “We’re not sure what to expect in Ireland, we just know it won’t be easy.

“Hopefully we’ll gel together like we’ve done before and that we’ll return home as the champions.”

The trio were due to fly out to Dublin this afternoon. Groundsmen Godfrey and Wingfield would like to thank their employer ‘The Landscape Group’, who have been supportive throughout.
