Bognor boxer Gibbens looks to next level after points win

BOGNOR'S Alex Gibbens is keen to get more wins under his belt after solid footwork and a damaging left jab carried him to victory over Simone Lucas in Portsmouth.

The Liquid and Envy nightclub bout was taken by Gibbens at short notice and Lucas was in very good shape for it.

Gibbens, who beat Lucas 40-36 on points, won every round on the way to his middleweight success over Lucas, who ensured he didn’t have it all his own way.

Gibbens looked fairly slick as he did enough to send a healthy following home happy, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement.

Gibbens’ supporters were out in force after they’d watched his winning first bout at Hove last month.

Trainer Faz Chitama said: “To beat Simone Lucas in only his second contest was amazing.

“Alex would like to thank all his fans for supporting him and for making the night special as they also shouted Liam Griffiths and Jon Fry to success.

“The fans were not disapponted. Alex showed them a masterclass of moving and punching and uppercuts.

“After watching back the fight on DVD, it was obvious Alex had won every round. Alex has won every round of his professional boxing career to date.”

Ronnie Davies, who manages Gibbens, was delighted by the performance and has high hopes for his continued success.

Chitama added: “Alex performed well and we know there is a lot more in the tank.

“We hope to keep racking up the wins and early next year we would expect to step up a level as he did on his last contest.”
