The 11-year-old Bognor boxer went straight on the attack in his semi-final against Saqif Ali of Hall Green of ABC Birmingham.

His opponent was taller, but Rowles boxed through Ali’s punches, scoring and punching with a high rate of straight punches for all three rounds to win on a split decision.

In the final Rowles was on fire – very aggressive and strong, forcing his opponent Ed James (Lyminster ABC) back throughout the contest with two-handed combinations of lefts and rights and not giving his opponent any space to get his own punches off.

The last round found Rowles on the attack for the entire round, so it was no surprise when his hand was raised on a split decision to make him the 40kg/42kg box cup champion.

His coach Charlie Martin said: “Darren’s hard work in the gym has paid off. He is a perfect boy to coach – I am very proud to be his coach and it’s a great high for Bognor Boxing Club and me.”
