Bognor boxer's triumph to be seen by Eurosport viewers

Jimmy Harrison will prove age is not a barrier to boxing success tonight (Friday) when his title-winning performance in the UK's premier boxing league features in a special one-hour show on British Eurosport.

The 46-year-old’s gutsy performance against Manchester’s Paul Haines, who was 20 years his junior, at the Queensbury Boxing League’s Striking Distance promotion caught the eye of the channel’s producers and will feature as part of the main card of boxing at 10pm.

The former England amateur captain and professional boxer made his return to the sport after nearly 20 years to claim the vacant Queensbury British Light Welterweight title in front of a packed arena at the Effingham Park Hotel.

Now Harrison’s performance will be seen by thousands more when his battle with Haines takes centre stage on the show.

For Harrison, the win fulfilled his ambition of winning a boxing title and with the belt now firmly in the possession of the Bognor resident he is looking forward to sitting back and watching the action from the comfort of home.

“Winning the belt was a fantastic feeling and it was a tough fight but I felt I had done enough in there to take the win,’ said Harrison.

“I knew he had a whack on him but I managed to do enough on the night to win the title and I’m looking forward to seeing the show and my fight now.”

Harrison, who trains out of the town’s VK boxing gym alongside his son Louis, who is also a promising boxing star, will have no doubt inspired some of the many younger fighters at the gym with his performance.

But Harrison feels there is still plenty left for him to give to the sport and will be looking to make the first defence of his title in September.

To watch Harrison’s title win, tune into British Eurosport tomorrow at 10pm on Sky Sports channel 410. For Virgin Media viwers, it’s on channel 521.
