Cotton is winning material as Chichester boxing club triumph again

CHICHESTER boxing club St Gerards travelled to Titchfield ABC's open show at Sarisbury Green near Fareham.

Representing them was senior boxer Arron Cotton, who is Chichester born and bred and aged 23, weighing 78kg.

He was having his second outing in just over a month for his second amateur contest. Cotton faced young Domaz Tamdjaitis from the Inner City BC near London, weighing 78kg.

St Gerards coach Gerry Lavelle had studied Tamdjaitis and told Cotton to keep it long with straight jabs and straight rights. He followed the advice and clearly won the first round with some powerful right-hand crosses.

In the second Cotton’s opponent tried spoiling tactics but the Chichester man again clearly won the round with the more telling blows.

In the first minute-and-a-half of the penultimate round, Cotton struck blow after blow, forcing the referee to issue a standing eight count, which Domaz badly needed as his nose was bleeding.

There were only about ten seconds left of the round and Tamdjaitis hung on to finish the contest.

Cotton was awarded the contest by a unanimous points decision as he clearly won all three rounds in the judge’s eyes.

Lavelle said: “Young Arron is a bit special with a granite chin and bombs in both hands but he is still technically a novice so he will be brought along slowly and accordingly to plan.

“He is that good I have come out of retirement and I’m working the corners again, so he must be doing something right.

“We plan to have him ready for the novice championships in October, when I believe he’s capable of picking up his first title.

“Arron started boxing only six months ago so is a late starter but he wants to perform.”
