Harrison confident of landing Queensbury title

Boxer Jimmy Harrison is confident he still has what it takes to become a champion when he returns to action later this month to challenge Great Yarmouth's Elton Smart for the vacant Queensbury Boxing League light welterweight title.

The 46-year-old last laced up the gloves in 1991 and amassed 18 wins from 22 contests during six years run as a pro.

But super-fit Harrison has kept himself in peak condition through his passion for marathon running and feels he is in the best shape of his life and is ready to show his younger opponent how it’s done when the pair (pictured) collide.

Inspired by watching son Louis follow him into the sport, Harrison insists age will not matter come fight night at the Effingham Park Hotel near Crawley.

“ During my time away from the sport I’ve kept myself in great shape through running, and since I’ve been back in the gym I feel just as good as I did when I was competing as a pro,” commented Harrison, from Bognor. “My training for this title opportunity has been going really well and I’ve been getting some great sparring in so I really feel confident it will be a Harrison victory and it will be me returning as the champion.

“I know my opponent is younger and he’s only lost once in his 17-fight career, but I think my experience and body shots can win this for me so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Harrison has been preparing at the VK Gym in Bognor under coach Charlie Martin. With the gym proving to be a hotbed of young boxing talent, Harrison’s exploits could provide the other young hopefuls with the inspiration to compete.

Harrison’s title challenge will be the joint main event on the evening’s bumper card of Queensbury boxing.
