Booth, who last boxed in the Haringey Box Cup, winning the silver medal against a Swiss opponent, is really excited about the rating and is determined to live up to the accolade.

St Gerards coach Gerry Lavelle said; “It’s perfect timing as Ellie is preparing for the elite championships at the Echo Arena in Liverpool over the weekend of April 29 to May 1, where she will do everything in her power to lift that title.

“She has a great opportunity to do so if she performs accordingly.

“This rating and winning the title would be a real high point for her, coming in addition to her receiving the honour of boxing for her country and gaining her first senior England vest.

“Ellie has dreamed about this since she first joined our club at the tender age of 11. Her first-ever contest in Hull, winning with a second-round retirement by her opponent, paved the way for her future as a pugilist.

“Since that day she has picked up junior and senior national titles at differing weights and four silvers and one gold medal at the Haringey Box Cup with her last club and St Gerards.”

At the age of 16 she left to join Portsmouth University’s boxing club, Gym01, after she received sponsorship help. She returned ‘home’ to St Gerards just over a year ago.

Lavelle said: “She is training at least twice a day six days a week with additional training to increase her speed and power which has increased dramatically.

“The club now have a very strong female contingency following in Ellie’s footsteps.

“We have Holly Heffron, who’s 13 and is more than capable of gaining a junior England vest in the very near future; Abigail Wawman, 16; Katie Wawman, 18; and Lily Hounsome, 20.

“All the girls are well grounded and skilled in the noble art as they follow Ellie’s lead. Ellie is a born and bred Chichester lass and she is determined to put her city on the big boxing map.”

Bognor Boxing Club’s 15-year-old Yusif Shar had his second contest in a week, fighting Jimmy Fuller from Brighton & Hove ABC at the Metropole Hotel, Brighton.

Shar boxed well behind a sharp left lead catching Fuller with punches as he went forward and backwards. Although he tired in the last round, he had won the first two – only to hear he had lost on a split decision on the judges’ scorecards.

Bognor junior Darren Rowles, 11, had a bye into the next round at the national minor championships.
