It has been a very tough year for amateur boxing – with a lot of long-standing cubs having to close their gym doors for good because of Covid and too little financial backing, to get them through, things are now starting to look more positive for those that have got through it.

Having been back for around a month, Horsham Boxing Club officials say they are pleased to see their numbers are as strong as ever – from competing boxers to boxers on the cusp and raw beginners.

The junior classes are now beginning to pick up and the coaches are expecting to see even more numbers over the next couple of weeks.

All in all, the club now have 22 boxers ready to compete or already competing – and with at least another 20 or so beginners.

Session times are Mondays and Wednesday from 5pm to 6pm for juniors and 6pm to 7:30pm for seniors.

The Thursday session will restart in May as they’re hoping to be back at maximum numbers then.

With news coming shortly on the result of the club’s planned extension, the club will hopefully be looking to extend their gym space in June or July time which will give them much needed space for their limited gym.

With their home show booked for November 6 at the Drill Hall, the boxers are eager to get out and display their hard worked on skills.

Boxercise sessions are held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6:30pm to 7:30pm and they welcome all those who would like to try the boxing /fitness side.

Coach Libby Baker said, “Last Monday when I arrived to help with the junior session, I was delighted to see so many old faces and staying on to help with the senior session.

“Even though I was shocked at how many had turned up to train, it is great for the club and shows how much everyone thinks of the place to be turning up in such numbers.

“Currently being out injured myself but seeing the buzz in the gym, I can’t wait to get back to full training myself.

"Anybody wishing to join the club, please email or alternatively send a message via social media where I personally will return your message and arrange for you to join a session.”
