The 15-year-old had been out for six months and weighed in at 56kg in the featherweight division for a tussle with Byron Jones of Crawley BC, also 15 and 56kg.

Coach Jon Mills, working the corner, said: “We knew Freddie would be a little rusty in ringcraft, but he is so unique in his style that we knew he would still perform accordingly.”

In the first round the pair were checking each other out behind tentative jabbing. Hayes found his range and started throwing some classic punches.

Hayess clearly won the first round in the eyes of his corner.

Mills said: “I told Freddie before the start of the second round to keep to the centre of the ring and use little clusters of combinations as Jones was coming forward in a crouch-like style trying to capture him in the corner or on the ropes with counter punches.

“Freddie did as he was instructed and caught Byron with some power-laden shots, and Freddie secured another round.”

In the third, Mills told Hayes to do more of the same and he did just that, using combination switch-hitting from southpaw to orthodox to great effect gunning down Jones with a barrage of blows to head and body.

Jones was always in the mix trying his best to fire back to no avail.

Mills said: “Freddie was too slick and agile on this occasion, winning the contest by a unanimous decision.

“He did himself and the club proud, considering the time he has had out since his last bout. The new season looks good for him. If can keep his attendance up at the club, he will be entered in all the major championships.”
