World is now her oyster

Haywards Heath Muay Thai boxing sensation Ruth Ashdown has been crowned the new WBC World Champion and women’s World No 1 after lifting the title last weekend at the Copthorne Hotel. Ashdown knocked out French/Algerian Lailla Akanoud in just two rounds.

This latest win should open new doors for Ashdown.

She had the crowd on her side at the Copthorne Hotel in Crawley and they let her know. She found her range quickly, while at the same time forcing her opponent to miss.

It soon became clear that Ashdown’s power was too much for the French/Algerian fighter and coming out for the second round, the local woman landed a quick double jab followed by a right hook that sent her opponent to the floor for the first and last time.

“I’ve achieved my dream and made a legacy for myself in my sport,” said Ashdown afterwards. “It was the best night with overwhelming support: I couldn’t have asked for more, the atmosphere was electric. This will open doors for me and my team around the world,”
