Thunder begin the new season away to Westminster Warriors in the National Trophy on Saturday and guard Okoronkwo returns for his fourth season with the club and coach Daniel Hildreth said: “Brendan has to be considered as one of the premier players in the league with his strength and speed.

“During the summer break, Brendan has bulked up even more, which is great for us, especially defensively, making him more versatile at both ends of the court.

“I think with the return of Tom Ward, this will enable Brendan to flourish even more with his explosive play.

“He is extremely hard working and driven to succeed, a part of his character that as a coach you just love. He also has very high expectations of himself.”

Okoronkwo said: “It’s great to be back playing at the best venue in the NBL and with a committed bunch of guys.”

McLaren, who is from Brighton, is a key part of the developmental programme at South Coast Elite Basketball and also works in the local community helping coach the next generation.

Hildreth said: “Joe had a great year in Division 4 last season and I have followed his progress with the intention of him playing when his commitments allowed.

“Joe is a heart on your sleeve type player who gives everything he can on every play.

“He will give us some size at the guard position and versatility in the forward spot.

“Joe really impressed me during the summer with his work ethic, which becomes contagious on court in both practice and games. Although it is a step up in standard from last year, I have every confidence that Joe is more than capable of helping the team reach this year’s goals.”
