A stunning spell of bowling from Adam Barton fired Hastings Priory’s cricketers to a vital victory yesterday (Saturday).
The left-arm quick blew away the Ifield batting with outstanding figures of 8-24 from 12 overs as Priory made it seven home wins out of eight this season.
The result keeps third-placed Priory within touching distance of the sides filling the two promotion places. They trail second-placed Worthing by 12 points and leaders Lindfield by 17 with three matches remaining.
Barton wasted little time making his mark, dismissing all of Ifield’s top four for just five runs between them - three of them without scoring.
Finn Hulbert then picked up a wicket on his first outing for the front side this season before Barton struck three more times in relatively quick succession to leave Ifield eight down.
Ifield’s ninth wicket pair put up some dogged resistance to give the score a bit of respectability before that man Barton made the breakthrough by dismissing Rahul Patel for 12 off 44 balls.
Jed O’Brien sealed Priory’s 100-run win by bowling the last man to leave Ifield all out for 80 in 37.3 overs and Mahad Ahmed unbeaten on 33 from 90 deliveries.
Priory had earlier been dismissed for 180 after winning the toss and choosing to bat. The innings was based around half-centuries from two of the top five.
Joe Billings made 60 from 84 balls with 11 fours opening the batting, while Jake Woolley hit 56 from 106 deliveries with six fours and a six - season’s best scores for both batsmen.
Hulbert was the next highest scorer with 18, while for Ifield, spinner Guru Kedarnath celebrated his fourth successive five-for with 6-68 off 22 overs and replaces O’Brien as the division’s leading wicket-taker.
Standings (all played 15 matches): 1 Lindfield 338pts, 2 Worthing 333, 3 HASTINGS PRIORY 321, 4 Three Bridges 288, 5 Pagham 276, 6 St James’s Montefiore 265, 7 Ifield 256, 8 Ansty 219, 9 Findon 211, 10 CROWHURST PARK 104.
