The Bexhill potter hit three century breaks and six other runs over 50 on his way to a 10-5 victory over Stuart Carrington in round two of the qualifiers in Sheffield.

Robertson will face Alan McManus in the final round tomorrow and Wednesday, and another win there would put him through to the event proper, which will get under way at The Crucible Theatre on Saturday.

The opening four frames of yesterday’s match were shared, world number 36 Robertson winning the second and third without conceding a point thanks to breaks of 82 and 96.

World number 61 Carrington didn’t pot a ball in frames five and six as Robertson went 4-2 ahead courtesy of a magnificent 136 break, which he followed with a 75 in the next.

Carrington hit back with a run of 115 in frame seven only for Robertson to clinch the final two frames of the opening session with runs of 82 and 51 to lead 6-3.

Although Robertson lost the first frame of the second session, he proceeded to reel off the next three in scintillating fashion with brilliant breaks of 73, 106 and 122.

Mark Davis, from St Leonards, trails Chinese player Zhang Anda 5-4 after the opening session of their second round match yesterday afternoon. They will play to a finish this afternoon, with the winner set to face Fergal O’Brien or Zhou Yuelong.
