Burgess Hill Runners’ focus turns to Brooks Sussex Cross Country league

Following completion of the West Sussex Fun Run League for 2014, the club’s main competitive focus has turned to the altogether tougher Brooks Sussex Cross Country league.

The club’s performance here too has been improving in recent years including an increasing number of club participants prepared to test themselves against the county’s best runners.

Saturday saw the second meeting of the season at Plumpton College and there were some great performances in the extremely wet and muddy conditions around the course (5 miles for men and 3 miles for women).

The senior men’s ‘A’ team finished a creditable third on the day in Division 2, holding on to third spot overall in the league, with the B team finishing above half way in Division 3.

Individual performances were led by Darryl Webb (32.05) supported by Paul Sargent (33.12), Neil Grigg (35.01), James Sorbie (37.16), Andy Sayers (38.28), Alan Fry (39.22), Stuart Condie (40.04) and John Palmer (47.20).

The senior ladies team finished a creditable 10th in Division 2 and are now 12th (out of 29) and were represented by Sharona Harrington (25.18), Emma Leeson (29.01) and Liz Carter (29.57). Continuing the success of the Junior Academy, Laura Wickers (9.12) and Amy Mills (9.22) made their cross country debuts in the Under 11s race.

Away from racing, the club was represented at a gala dinner at the Grand Hotel in Brighton last week for the Sussex Sports Awards by Chairman Mark Craigs, Head Coach Liz Cooper, Welfare Officer Nina Ecroyd and the driving force behind the achievement, Sue Baillie where formal recognition of the achievement of Clubmark status was recognised and a certificate presented. The club was the first running club in the South East to achieve this accreditation.
