BURTON'S BRAINS BEFORE BRAWN

ADAM BURTON rejected a move to division rivals Wick, then his 16th goal of the season for Lancers wrapped up the despatch of an unfocused Steyning side on Saturday.

Burton struck 10 minutes from time to put another smile on boss Mark Cox's face, having drawn one on the 68th minute when he headed a Graham Martin delivery back across goal for Brett Court to walk Lancers into the lead.

The outcome was perfection, after Steyning half-cleared a Welsey Lopez corner. Then Burton expertly took his chance from a fine John Rhodie pass and Cox had received the thoughtful football he had demanded in the last third of the pitch.

Cox said: "The pitch was a leveller '” it's bottomless up there at Steyning '” but apart from the first 10 minutes, I thought it was only a matter ofwhen we would score and take over the game.

"Steyning worked hard and they'd done well to get the game on. Our plan was to soak it up and get out on the break. We're prepared these days to roll up our sleeves and have a go, as you need to on days like these."

James Hannah, against his recently previous club, and the tireless, indestructable skipper Dean McDonald were Lancers' stars.

Warren Levy will not be backed by Lancing in his appeal against his recent sending off against Shoreham.
