Carrying on rare Eriskays

A rare Eriskay pony has been born on the South Downs hundreds of miles from the island of Eriskay of the Western Isles of Scotland, where the breed originated.

Faygate Calanain is owned by Maxine Harwood of Faygate Rare Breeds, Faygate, Horsham and is one of the last survivors of the native ponies of the Western Isles.

Eriskay ponies origins are lost in the mists of time but historically there are Celtic and Norse connections.
