Cathy completes Euro medal treble

Cathy Bargh has completed a hat-trick of European Senior Badminton Championships singles medals.

The Sedlescombe-based talent won bronze in Bulgaria, matching her performance in Ireland two years ago having won silver in Spain four years back.

Bargh reached the semi-finals of the over-50 women’s singles, an event which went exactly to the seedings with the number one beating the number two in the final and the 3/4 seeds bowing out in the last four.

Having received a bye in the first round of an event which attracted 21 entries, Bargh came from behind to get the better of Ilona Kienitz (Germany) 20-22, 21-14, 21-6 in round two.

She then overcame Christine Morcel (France) 21-10, 21-8 in the quarter-finals only to be edged out 15-21, 17-21 by Svetlana Zilberman Beliasov (Israel).

It’s worth pointing out, though, that Beliasov didn’t concede more than eight points per game in any of her other three matches, including the final, so Bargh ran her much closer than any other opponent.

Bargh also contested the over-45 women’s singles alongside Kay Vickers. They received a bye in round one before cruising past Bettina Horbach and Martina Tusche (Germany) 21-6, 21-5 in round two.

Vickers and Bargh were then pipped 17-21, 21-13, 16-21 in their quarter-final against number two seeds Sandra Kroon and Jeannette Van Der Werff (The Netherlands) having been 10-5 up in the decider.

Buoyed by her good start to the season, Bargh will be back in action this weekend with the Sussex Restricted Championships at Falmer.
