Cawte's Trump card gives him a good hand at Selsey

The Ronnie Edwards is the most prestigious competition of the year next to the club championship. For Cawte it was a walk in the park as far as getting his hands on the trophy – he had already won it on four previous occasions with different drawn partners, but for Trump, victory was a first.

Cawte has always been excellent with approach shots leaving Trump many times to sink that putt, which he did on several occasions much to their delight and surprise.

Just two shots ahead of Tony Lee and Vic Wade, once again Cawte saw his name in gold on the board alongside Trump, coming in with a nett 70.

Club captain Alan Parker congratulated the winners and presented the silver tankards.

AVISFORD PARK

Despite the changeable weather, everyone thoroughly enjoyed this year’s President’s Putter competition.

At the end of a hard-fought round, the president of the seniors’ section, Mike Gammon, presented the distinctive trophy to winner Colin Robinson. Peter Redford came second and Peter J Brown was third.

More recently, the seniors have played matches on the rather more energetic courses at Hill Barn and at Waterhall – on both occasions coming second!

Avisford’s midweek medal was won by Gary Spight with a nett 62. The Saturday Stableford went to Timothy Grinstead with 38 points

The three-club competition was won by Bob Boulter with 34 points, ahead of Kevin Lewis with 28. The senior Stableford was won in division one by Al Winterton with 36 points and in division two by Peter Brown with 36.

COWDRAY PARK

The July Medal attracted a field of 81.

Scores: Div 1: 1 Mark Jasper nett 70 ocb, 2 Steve White 70, 3 Howard Kasey 71. Div 2: 1 Simon Dickenson 69 ocb, 2 Dave Fowler 69, 3 Peter Hardcastle 72. Div 3: 1 Alan Cram 70 ocb, 2 John Wyatt 70, 3 Mick Colban 73.

The Purcell Cup involved 34 pairs in a betterball Stableford.

Scores: 1 Trevor and Harry Challen 40 ocb, 2 Russell Stagg and Kevin Raishbrook 40, 3 Mike Purdie and Mark Upton 40.

The Cowdray Antlers saw 14 pairs play in a mixed foursomes medal.

Scores: 1 Peter Harding and Polly Davenport 71, 2 Mike O’Brien and Pat Wallace 74, 3 Mike Hughes and Sue Brown 74.

The Stent and Edwards cups were played for by 49 players. The Stent Cup was won and lost over 36, the Edwards Cup from the best 18 holes.

Results: Stent Cup - 1 Archie Challen 76pts, 2 Ady Poole 74, 3 Andy Morgan 73. Edwards Cup - 1 Dave Hirons 39 ocb, 2 David Hayward 39, 3 Andy Morgan 38.

On the hottest day of the year so far, 28 pairs of Cowdray Park seniors competed for the Podmore Salver, won last year by Graham Evans and Peter Hallt with 40 points. The format is pairs playing Greensome Stableford with seven 16ths combined handicap allowance.

Early scoring was mixed with few groupings scoring more than 30 points, with the exception of high handicappers Gary Strowbridge and Philip Singer, who set a clubhouse target of 38 points. Their lead did not last long, as two pairs playing alongside each other returned the winning two scores.

Fresh from his win in the Captains’ Challenge, Mike Hancock and new partner Mike Hughes registered a superb 43, beating playing companions Paul Owen and John Kitchener into second place with 39 points. The sun seemed to affect the remaining pairs as only George Crouch and John Smith with 37 points threatened the leaders.

CHICHESTER

Chichester ladies played the third leg of their four seasons competition. Rain before this ‘summer’ leg made conditions tricky.

Combined scores from the Tuesday and Saturday competitions reveled the winner was lady captain Elaine Fell with 38 points. Second was Helen Ball with 37 and third Erica Ellicott with 36.

The sun shone for Lady Captain’s Day. A two-tee start saw 45 ladies take part in a Bowmaker competition. Pimms and canapés before the ninth tee revitalised them for the back nine.

In first place were Val Edwards, Lisa Jackson and Yvonne Leaver with 70 points. Second with 69 were Sang Porter, Sue Ward and Janet Leonard and third with 68 were Jeannie Blackman, Terry Payne and Pam Hart. A meal and prize-giving followed.

In the July medal, unusually good conditions did not make for wonderful scoring. The first three places were taken with the same nett score of 80. On countback Angela Perkins was first, second Amanda Mackenzie and third Sue Winterbotham. Ladies played a Stableford and the winner with 38 points was Sarah Jessop. Second was Mary-Lou Litton with 36, third Helen Ball (34).

BOGNOR

Forty-five Bognor ladies had an exchange day with the ladies from Lee-on-the-Solent GC. A four-ball better ball game was played on one of the hottest days of the year. Winners were Nicki Vincent and Kim Mercer with 41pts

For those who didn’t go, a qualifying Stableford was played. Winner was Sally Cameron with 36 points, ahead of Sian Southerton on 35 and Suzanne Taylor on 34 (ocb).
