The fabulous fable of a footballing family.

“Black or white we have football under our skin.” Eusebio.

Let me introduce you to Diversity United FC from Brighton. With so much negativity in the news, a positive story is definitely worth shouting about.

Firstly, they are not a football team created by members of the inventive dance troupe seen on BGT in 2009! Susan Boyle is not their arch rival! Their tactics do not include backflips, breakdancing and body popping. Although, that would be spectacular to watch and would confuse the opposition.

In 2016, a group of people had an idea. Their mission was to create a football club which offered a positive and inclusive environment where everyone felt welcomed and valued. It’s about empowering people by respecting and appreciating what makes them different, in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, religion and traditions.

Today they have more than 30 registered players which consist mainly of African descent, mixed with a diverse background, faith and experience.

They believe that football can change lives and have a positive impact on the community. It improves physical and mental health and also helps communication skills.

Diversity United currently play in the Brighton and Worthing district league at Level 14. Their home ground is next door to Whitehawk FC in the East Brighton Park. Promotion is important, but personal development is crucial.

A spokesperson shared: "Diversity United is more than just a football club; it's a family. We believe that football has the power to unite people, regardless of their differences. We are proud to be a part of a community that embraces diversity and celebrates individuality."

I’m not saying that other football clubs fail to embrace diversity and inclusion. I just wanted to highlight this group of people who are passionate about making a real difference in their communities.

Last year they won the League Charity Cup. This year they are pushing for promotion. Next year, who knows? New Players and supporters are always welcome to come down and introduce themselves. The next George Weah is just waiting to be discovered.
