Celebration Mile is highlight of big weekend of racing at Goodwood

BRONZE PRINCE is in line to pick up the £100,000 Betfair bonus for winning the inaugural Betfair Summer Double at Goodwood on Saturday.

John Gosden’s four-year-old won the first leg of the two-race bonus when beating The Confessor by half a length on Betfair King George Weekend at Ascot on July 23, and is among the entries for Saturday’s contest. William Buick is again booked for the ride.

And in the Group 2 Betfair Celebration Mile on the same card, Strong Suit is the likely market leader in a high class line-up, which also features last year’s winner Poet’s Voice, Timeform’s top-rated in the race.

Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin commented: “Both of the Betfair-sponsored handicaps in our Summer Double are very valuable races in their own right – Bronze Prince landed connections £62,250 for winning at Ascot – but we decided to inject a bit more interest this year by offering the £100,000 bonus for winning both contests.

“And thankfully connections of Bronze Prince have taken up the challenge.

“And a pleasing aspect of the bonus is that all connected with the horse will benefit if Bronze Prince wins on Saturday, as the breakdown of the bonus is 60% to the owner, 20% to the trainer, 10% to the jockey and 10% to the stable staff.”

On Sunday, as well as an exciting afternoon of racing, there’s a host of free entertainment for children with a big wheel, carousel, face painting, circus workshop and magicians.

Also the National Theatre’s award-winning play War Horse will be present for you to meet - and you can see how they recreate the movements of a real horse.

The day starts with the Charles Owen Pony Races at 1pm and 1.10pm, which should prove to be as exciting as the racing on the main card. The young jockeys riding on the hallowed turf at Goodwood could be the flat racing winners of the future.

If you haven’t booked there are still tickets avliable - either online www.goodwood.com or by calling 01243 755055.
