Charman: ‘I don’t think there is a better candidate than myself’

Charman, a local lad who has featured more than 500 times for the first team, was speaking shortly after news broke that Colbran had resigned from his post.

Charman said: “It is a position that needs filling and I don’t think there is a better candidate than myself - I am Horsham through and through and know the players inside out.

“I take charge tomorrow (against Sittingbourne) as caretaker manager and I have a meeting next week to talk about issues that the club want to bring up with me.”

A fan favourite for a number of years, Charman made his Hornets debut in 1998.

He said that he and Colbran speak ‘every day’, and thanked the previous manager for his impact at the club.

He said: “Simon is one of those managers who was 100 per cent and gave everything he had.

“Me, Rob (Frankland, goalkeeping coach) and all the players wish him all the best whatever he chooses to do.

“At the end of the day, Simon has got to do what is best for Simon - he and his family come first.”

Charman will take charge of the club for tomorrow’s (Saturday November 16) fixture away at Sittingbourne.

He said: “We will try our darndest to get three points tomorrow. It might be one of those excellent performances because of the situation.”
