Dominic Miller, who attends The Prebendal School, gained full selection for the England squad following a score of 9/11 at the Leeds Rapidplay tournament which prompted the national squad to give him a straight norm, usually only achieved from two qualifying tournaments.

Dominic, from East Preston near Littlehampton, is also part of the Sussex under-14 and under-16 chess squads that have just won national titles.

Coach Chris Jones, who has been teaching Dominic for nearly two years, said: “Dominic has a natural ability and his achievements are beginning to shine through after his hard work over the past few years.

“I am a regional master and I think Dominic will pass this if he continues to develop at his current rate. I think he can easily achieve the title of fide master and possibly even international master status, depending on how his game develops over the next five or six years.”

Prebendal headmaster Tim Cannell said: “He is obviously one to watch as his chess record is already extremely impressive. He thoroughly deserves the England selection and we are all watching his progress with great admiration.”
