Chichester athletes head for Parliament Hill

Before Chichester's veterans did battle over the Downs near Lancing, the same venue hosted the Sussex schools cross-country championships earlier the same day, with a number of local athletes selected for the southern inter counties on February 5.

Chichester Runners’ juniors and seniors travel to Parliament Hill Fields in London, considered the home of English cross-country, for the South of England club championships, on Saturday (Jan 29).

The standard is certain to be fierce with the best teams in the south, including national champions Aldershot & Farnham, doing battle in one of the most competitive events of the year.

The junior races commence at 11am and the meeting ends with the senior men, who will tackle nine miles of strength-sapping terrain over three full laps of Hampstead Heath.

The following day there is sure to be a good turnout for the Worthing seafront four-mile race. Part of the West Sussex Fun Run League calendar, the race also attracts runners determined to improve their basic speed on a fast flat course where the leaders will be running well under five-minute miles.

The local scene also sees two of the most popular events on the year during the next few weeks.

After the Chichester Priory 10k – see our preview on the back page – local clubs, schools and works teams will be looking forward to this year’s Chichester Corporate Challenge around the streets of the city centre.

Races will be held on three Wednesdays in March – 2, 16 and 30 – and further details will appear in the Observer soon.

Entry forms are available from the Corporate Challenge website or the Westgate Leisure noticeboard.

Both the 10k and Corporate Challenge are celebrating their 20th anniversary.
