Chichester fencers fly flag in British finals

A number of Chichester fencers headed to Sheffield to represent the south-east at the British Youth Championships.

This massive event sees most of Britain’s top fencers competing – and just qualifying is an achievement in itself.

In the sabre, 14-year-old Archie Evans competed in the boys’ under-16 event. Against seriously-fast and aggressive opposition, he fenced with grace and good manners that were a credit to his club.

Freya Jenkins represented the south-east in the girls’ under-14s – this was only her second major competition and she fenced fabulously.

In epee, Robin Elliot fenced in the under-16 boys with his usual confidence to finish in the top half of the final rankings.

Double qualifier Charlotte Beadle fenced very well in the under-18 girls’ foil and epee. She is a natural eppeist but the standard in the under-18 event was simply superb and after a fantastic first direct elimination round, 16-year-old Beadle was knocked out by eventual medallist Kerenza Bryson.

Chichester’s foilists had the most success. Isaac Jolley, Oscar Pickering and Tom Raymond-Wells fenced superbly in the under-16 foil.

Jolley in particular put in an amazing performance, eventually conceding a narrow defeat to the eventual bronze winner Sebastian Sacchi-Wilson.

In the under-18 event, Oscar O’Hara was spectacular, securing fifth place from an outstanding field.

In the under-14s, Harry Gray fenced very well but young Tara Sallaba, in the under-14 girls’ foil astounded everyone with a magnificent performance, finishing in fifth place and securing her very first medal at the British championships.
