Chichester ladies boost Sussex tennis squad

In the 2013 seniors’ inter-county championships, Sussex’s women’s 50 squad won promotion to the premier division.

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club had two players in the team – Sue Foott, who won eight of the ten rubbers she played, and Gilly Stuart Smith, who won four out of six.

The squad were victorious against teams from Somerset, Gloucester, Middlesex, Devon and Dorset to win the division and clinch a much-deserved promotion.

For the 2014 summer season, a third member of the Chichester club, Sue Hine, has been selected to play for the same county team.

The Sussex ladies seniors’ team begin their division-one campaignat home to county champions Essex at Chichester.

Essex won 4-1. Foott, recently been promoted to No2 string in the squad, convincingly won 6-2, 6-2. Foott and Sussex No1 Anne Clark paired up for one of the doubles matches and despite a valiant effort they lost 1-6, 6-4, 0-1.

Hine (No4 string for Sussex) played in the other two doubles matches (with Gill Mastrangelo, which Essex won.

Sussex have fixtures away to Lancashire and Surrey and at home to Hertfordshire and Kent later in the season.
