Chichester motorsport duo give Metro a stylish send-off

The MG was a famous Group B rally car of the 1980s but after 26 years of competitive rallying, the iconic car has now been retired from national events.

The Chichester duo, who have been rallying together for eight years, gave it a memorable run around the forest – but almost came a cropper.

Simon said: “The Sunseeker was a huge success at the opening BRC championship round.

“There were thousands of people on Poole Quay for the ceremonial start on the Friday night, where it was a case of meet and greet and signing autographs!

“On Saturday morning we started well and we were sixth overall before lunch and first service in the national event.

“The stages were rough in places and we almost had a big accident at 70mph, clipping a bank and almost ending up in the trees.

“Fortunately we escaped, but with a lot of cosmetic damage to the car as we ripped the bottom spoiler and most of the front left wing off!

“The final loop of stages saw us go up to fifth overall before blowing the front differetial in two, unfortunately retiring from the event. So close yet so far!

“However, it was great to see so many people in the forests cheering the car on for the last time. Now it’s a case of rebuilding the car ready for the Festival of Speed in July.”
