Chichester triathletes keep stacking up the honours

CHICHESTER Westage Triathlon Club members Paul Reynolds, Dave Kitt and Lizzie Gerrard returned for the second year to take part in the Mid Sussex Triathlon in Burgess Hill.

It was a grey chilly start with heavy rain expected, but the weather held for the entire race.

The event comprised a 400m pool swim, 25.5km cycle (26km with diversion) and a 5k run.

Reynolds set the most significant pool time of the day, cutting down a ten-minute prediction to 8min 31sec.

The bike route then involved a steady climb for a mile and a half, with a rolling route after that with some further smaller climbs later on.

The run was then an out-and-back route.

The results were very close between all three CWTC members with Kitt finishing 118th in 1hr 30min 14sec, Reynolds 120th in 1.30.20 and Gerrard 133rd in 1.31.57.

In a blatant club series points capture, three members of CWTC entered the Dorset Try A Tri.

The points were well and truly earned as the appalling weather made the 16-mile cycle race and 7km run very cold and very wet.

The 400m swim was not much better as the pool was only 18m, making it a 22-length race, which meant lots of overtaking and turns to negotiate - and the number of people in this size pool made for a lot of waves more akin to a sea swim.

Del Morton completed the tri in 1hr 37min 06sec, finishing 21st, with Gary Williams 29th in 1.38.29 and and Steve Long 52nd in 1.45.06.

Meanwhile, seven members of CWTC got extra practice in one of the triathlon disciplines in the Arun 3.8km river swim.

Andrew Matthews had a particularly good race and came in second in the male veteran category, and Persephone Hagan also came second in her age group.

Chichester results: Andrew Matthews 52.15min, 15th; Mary Campbell 58.50, 44th; Philip Ingram 59.51, 54th; Persephone Hagan 1.01.55hr, 77th; Damian Homer 1.04.00, 103rd; Emma Gueterbock 1.08.03, 149th; Kevin Lockyear 1.09.47, 178th.
