Club athletes in record-breaking form

Hastings Athletic Club enjoyed considerable success at the Sussex Track & Field Championships.

The small contingent of Hastings athletes scooped 19 individual medals (seven gold, six silver and six bronze), as well as setting one championship record, five club records and 17 personal bests.

The female athletes were to the fore, led by Louisa James, who set a new PB and championship record in the under-20 women’s hammer with a throw of 57.66m.

Multi-eventers Katie Garland and Elise Lovell were at their best. Garland won the under-17 women’s long jump (5.30m) and high Jump (1.68m), both in personal bests with the high jump breaking the club record. She set another Hastings AC best with her 80m hurdles time of 12.1 which was good enough for silver on the day.

Lovell clinched county gold in the long jump with a leap of 5.50m. She also won silver in the high jump (1.50m) and bronze in the javelin (26.60m), and equalled the club record in the 100m hurdles with a personal best of 14.9.

Also in golden form was Grace Baker, who retained her under-17 women’s 1,500m crown in 4.37.9 with Rebecca Elphick claiming silver in 4.49.

The tables were turned the following day as Elphick took Baker on the line to win the 800m in a personal best and club record time of 2.18.0 with Baker half-a-second behind in second.
