Common hold out for opening day draw

IN THEIR first game back in Division Three of the East Sussex Cricket League, Common came up against a strong Rye team which included two former Bexhill County League players.

Common got off to a good start with Martin Barry being snapped up by Ricki Horne, but a fine innings of 52 by James Hamilton and an undefeated 36 from Martin Menezes guided Rye to a reasonable, if unspectacular total of 193-6.

The pick of the bowlers was left arm spinner Richard Melbourn who finished with 2-28, while Steve Southward distinguished himself with a run out with only one stump to aim at.

Common felt confident in reply and got off to a fair start with Southward and Winchester putting on 28 in quick time before Southward was dismissed. Despite the efforts of Peter Winchester (who hit seven fours in his 34) and Ali Burnett (who smashed six fours in his 43 not out), wickets continued to fall in a bid to reach the target inside 41 overs.

By this time conditions had deteriorated and some injudicious shots meant that last man Steve Cornford had to survive with Burnett for the final three overs to see Common to 130-9.

Common skipper Dave Plowman said: "Rye are a strong team and will be up there at the end of the season. Our aim is consolidation so we felt we did reasonably well in the circumstances."
