Conquerors of the British Isles

THEY ARE NOW champions of all Britain!

Field Place went forward to Leamington Spa on Thursday holding their 2004 bowls title of English Fours winners and added the five-nation British Isles Fours by defeating Jersey 21-5, then Wales 14-13 on the last end, and Scotland 15-12 in the final.

Jean Meneely, Freda Linberry and Wendy Davies forced St Brelades to resign two ends short after lunchtime, then they came from 13-11 down to beat Gilfach Bargoed in the afternoon.

Then on Friday morning they recovered from 11-7 behind to defeat Zetland, who had put out Ireland.

The only ones to have to play three times, they conquered changing conditions as well as determined opponents in the last two contests.

On the penultimate end of a match close through its entirety against Wales, Davies drew two shots to equalise 13-13. Then Meneely's drawn shot bowl was succesfully protected by her colleagues to snatch victory.

The Scots took the first five ends to lead 5-0 and set an atritional tone for the final. Field Place's catch-up mission reached 7-11 with four ends to play when they suddenly slammed a four onto the scorecard. Davies came to the mat holding three second woods and immediately took out Zetland's shot.

A two gave Field Place a 13-11 lead, Zetland pulled a shot back on the penultimate end, then on the last Meneely got the shot to put her team within reach of the title. Zetland lead June Struthers faltered and Davies turned in a Field Place bowl for second and did not need to deliver her third and last bowl.

England (Huntingdon County) also took the British Isles Triples.

The Singles and Pairs went to Ireland.
