Contentious penalty denies GP2’s Jolyon a podium finish

Southwater racer Jolyon Palmer has retained sixth place in this year’s GP2 championship standings after a positive end to a frustrating weekend in Barcelona.

A fourth place finish from tenth on the grid in Sunday’s ‘sprint’ race went some way towards making up for the disappointment of losing his well-earned podium finish in Saturday’s ‘feature’ race following a post-race stewards enquiry.

A 20 second penalty for being judged to have squeezed Sam Bird off in the closing stages demoted him from third to tenth in the final standings of Saturday’s race, although he made amends with a fourth place finish on Sunday and afterwards said: “Obviously I was really disappointed after the penalty on Saturday, so it was good to show again what we were capable of in Sunday’s race.”
