Cornish: Title still possible

Paddy Cornish insists the title remains a possibility for South Saxons.

The Hastings club is now five points off the pace as we approach the midway point in the South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One season.

Saxons captain Cornish said: “From what’s happened so far in this half of the season, anyone can take points off anyone. There’s a lot of teams in there that will take points off us and will take points off everyone else.

“The second half of the season is a whole new ball game. In this half we’ve played three of the big contenders away so we’ve got them all to play at home now.”

Third-placed Saxons really need to win their last two games before the festive break at home to 10th-placed Hailsham tomorrow (Saturday, push-back 1.30pm) and away to ninth-placed Middleton & Bognor next weekend.

Speaking of the 2-2 draw against Worthing II last weekend, Cornish said: “It was definitely a good point to be fair. It was a good game and it was pretty evenly matched so it was probably a fair result.”

Standings (played nine matches unless stated): 1 Mid-Sussex II 22pts, 2 Brighton & Hove III (8) 18, 3 SOUTH SAXONS 17, 4 Crowborough 16, 5 Penguin 15, 6 Eastbourne II 15, 7 Worthing II 13, 8 Crawley II 13, 9 Middleton & Bognor 9, 10 Hailsham (8) 8, 11 Lewes III 7, 12 Horsham III 1.
