County League round-up

ARUNDEL Football Club kept up their pursuit of third place in County League Division 1 with a 3-1 win over Shoreham on Saturday.

Mullets were far from at their best and were somewhat fortunate to be 3-0 up after only 21 minutes.

Shoreham's Neil Kane went close in the opening 10 seconds and Tom Smith grazed an Arundel post after just six minutes.

Arundel went ahead through Jason Wimbleton's volley from 12 yards on eight minutes before they struck twice inside a minute.

Dan Jordan, under pressure from Stuart Hack, headed into his own goal on 20 minutes. Then, within 60 seconds, Mullets' Josh Biggs chased down a long ball and headed over onrushing Shoreham keeper Paul Tubbs. It was Biggs' first goal for Arundel since joining from East Preston in March.

The second half was dominated by Shoreham and, with a bit more luck, they would have grabbed at least a point.

Kane was denied by Arundel keeper Steve Colbourne from two yards before Rob Boddy fired home on 56 minutes.

Arundel responded and Wimbleton headed against the bar before Shoreham were denied by the woodwork when Boddy's curling 25-yard strike hit the bar.

Mussels then saw Boddy's free kick cleared off the line, although Shoreham protested the ball had gone over the line.

There was still time for Jamie Groves to also hit the Arundel bar as Shoreham's bad luck continued.

If Arundel win at Chichester on Bank Holiday Monday, they will finish third.

In Division 3, Rustington lost for just the third time this season, 1-0 at Ifield Edwards.
