Cram in success at Cowdray Park ... Judy's so Sharpe at Selsey

Two competitions were played in some nice early-summer weather. The scores reflected the great condition of the course, which has been well watered during the recent dry period.

In the Baker Trophy, the overall winner with a fantastic 47 points was Alan Cram.

On the Friday, Archie Challen was first with 41 points ahead of Paul Terry with 39. Saturday saw Challen win with 41 and Paul Shaw second with 39.

On Sunday, first was Roger Hyde on 42 points, second Andy Marriner with 40. Monday saw Cram win with 47 ahead of Chris Strudwick on 40.

The Family Foursomes, always a well-supported competition, is a foursomes stableford played by any combination of family members.

First and second were father-and-son pairings among the 20 pairs competing.

Winners were Trevor and Archie Challen with 42 points, and second were Martyn and Jonathan Chevis with 38.

It was a good weekend for the club’s junior captain Archie Challen, who ended the weekend with his handicap reduced by four.

Cowdray Park seniors continued their relentless series of inter-club matches.

First up was the short journey to Liphook, to play the Liphook Elders (and betters) on the championship course. The result was a heavy 6-1 loss for Cowdray Park, with only a win from the final pair of Mike King and Peter Clarke preventing a complete whitewash.

The seniors returned to home territory and inflicted a 6½-1½ defeat on Bramley seniors, notoriously difficult to beat.

There was a sensational 6&5 win from Ian Heustice and David Carter and by halfway the margin between the teams had been extended to two up in favour of the home side. The final three matches went in favour of the home side to complete an emphatic win.

BOGNOR

Thirty-two pairs played in Bognor ladies’ Coronation foursomes stableford.

The Peugeot Coronation foursomes winners were Sian Southerton and Sophie James.

SELSEY

The ladies’ and veterans’ sections of Selsey Golf Club played their annual mixed greensomes. The weather was excellent, resulting in a very enjoyable competition for all the players.

Sue Bywater and Peter Brooks were the overall winners with 35 stableford points. Second were Judy Sharpe and Harry Newman with 34 and third were Barbara Winter and Dave Tindale.

Fourth were Hilary Kennedy-Cooke and Brian Mariner, fifth Sylvia Carter and Dave Green, sixth Janet Blackman and Vic Wade and seventh Penny Hesp and Maurice Grant.

CHICHESTER

Having won at Hassocks, Chichester GC ladies’ division-three team entertained Hassocks at home.

Several of the seven singles matches were very close, with three going to the 17th. Chichester won 4-3.

The Roy Keep Spring Pairs, a fourball betterball competition with partners drawn, was won by Lynn Plowman and Ivy Godson with 40 points. Second were lady captain Kathy Donohoe and her partner Angela Len on 37 points.

Saturday stableford: 1 Kirsty Prager 34pts ocb, 2 Helen Ball 34, 3 Rachel Greenland 33.

AVISFORD PARK

Avisford seniors continued their excellent home form with a convincing 4½-1½ win against Southsea.

Results (Avisford names first): Brian Coughlan & Peter Collins won 7&6 against Brian Barlow & Gordon Wilkins; George Shields & Gerry Reid lost by one to Peter Hopgood & Roy Hussey; Mike Gammon & Peter Brown won 7&6 against Alan Hartley & Ray Daniels; Bill Lock & David Feist won 3&2 against Bob Thompson & Den Saunders; Terry Smith & Colin Payne halved with Clive Whitlock & Bob Reeds; Alf Simpson & Mick Joyce won 2&1 against Dave Newport & Gerry Farrow.

Roy Hussey from Southsea won a bottle of wine in the nearest-the-pin contest on the 13th hole.

Avisford Park held a charity day in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

A stableford competition was won by Alan Miller with 38 points, while nearest-the-pin was won by Paul Napier-Raikes and the longest drive was won by Steve Neill. A raffle raised £400. Organiser Phil Pye thanked all who had supported the event.

In the American greensomes competition, winners were Andy Adams and Graham Twine ahead of Ron Bracher and Andy Cooke.

The senior stableford was won in division one by John Miller with 41 points and in division two by Nick Birch with 35.

The midweek stableford was won by John Miller on 41 points.
