Cricket: Aldwick turn Dome clash into Mission Accomplished

Third-placed Aldwick came up against table-toppers Dome Mission but the Invitation League division-three leaders were second best to the home team in a one-sided contest.

Batting first, Aldwick made a healthy 203 for eight despite accurate bowling from the various Mission bowlers.

Opener Joel Lodge (60) top-scored with a classy knock and, later on, Alex Cooper (51*) also impressed with an unbeaten half-century.

Set 204 for victory, the wheels came off for the league leaders as they tumbled to 26 for eight. Aldwick’s opening bowling pair of Keelan Belcher (5-23) and Adam Robinson (3-22) were unplayable in a top-drawer bowling masterclass.

In a late but ultimately meaningless partnership, the eighth-wicket pair moved the visitors’ total on to 59 but it was to no avail as their side crashed to defeat by 144 runs.

An emphatic victory and early finish was just what Aldwick wanted so they could catch the earlier ferry to the Isle of Wight in anticipation of their six-match tour.

Electricity batted first and Aldwick skipper Grant Wilson (3-13) was soon among the wickets again. Steve Ashcroft (34) and Gerry Bill (20) offered resistance but with good bowling support from Declan Belcher (2-30 in 15 overs) and others the home side could only manage a below-par 144 all out.

In reply, openers Chris Redman (11) and young Jordan Bist (89*) put on 70 for the first wicket and victory was almost inevitable.

Redman gave guidance and support to Bist, who easily made his top score for his club and was not out at the end when Aldwick passed the winning line.

Back after injury, Phil Hart made a quick 14 and the visitors were home after just 24.5 overs - leaving them to join their club-mates on the earlier ferry to start the IoW club tour.
