CRICKET: Challen to continue as Littlehampton captain

GARETH CHALLEN will continue as Littlehampton Cricket Club captain this year after taking over the role midway through last season.

Challen replaced Luke Vinter last year but was unable to prevent the club from sliding down into Sussex League Division 3 West.

They failed to win a league match all season but Challen is expecting better things this year. The club have already signed their overseas player as they target an immediate return back into Division 2.

Littlehampton hope Sri Lankan paceman Shohan Bowala will be their key weapon and Challen said: "We went through an agent to sign him, which should mean he'll be pretty good. He's played a couple of first-class games and his details are on the cric-info website.

"By all accounts, he's very quick, about 80 to 90mph, so it will be good to see him in the nets when he's over here.

"He's just coming back from injury but is a big prospect. He wanted to come over here and play for a lesser club this year. His aim is to take lots of wickets and get a bigger club next year. But if he enjoys it here and we get promoted, maybe he'll stay here."

Vinter, who had an elbow injury last season, should be fit for the start of this campaign but opening bowler from last season, Adam Tester, has retired.
