Cricket club bowled over by spring-clean

THE restoration day run by Bexhill Cricket Club on Saturday went "much better than anyone could ever have hoped for", according to first team vice-captain Hamish Russell.

Around 70 people were present throughout the project, part of a national facility facelift programme called CricketForce where a volunteer workforce carry out the improvements using materials donated by local businesses, and the previously ageing Polegrove pavilion was given a complete makeover.

"It went really, really well," Russell said, "much better than anyone could ever have hoped for. We've got somewhere we can be proud of and it goes to show we're making positive plans for the future.

"It's something we would like to do again in the future, maybe not every year, but perhaps every other year. It really does bode well for the club this season."

Walls were re-tiled and re-painted, new carpet was laid, a comprehensive cleaning programme was undertaken and new nets were erected.

Town Mayor Stuart Earl stopped off to conduct a re-opening ceremony and Bexhill CC chairman Mick Waghorn delivered a speech of thanks to all associated. The club also ran a barbecue for the workers and laid on a coaching session for around 20 youngsters.

Russell wished to thank Skinner & Reeves, Reynolds Hardware and Brewers for their support of the event and added that "we've made some real links with businesses in the community".

Sidley Cricket Club staged their version of the same project at the weekend and, despite a disappointing turn-out, managed to make decent progress on several fronts.

The two clubs meet in the opening fixture of the Sussex League Division Two season on Saturday April 30. Bexhill have added to their squad with the signing of former player Ian Ellis.
