CRICKET: Local round-up (September 9)

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club finished fourth in Sussex League Division 3 West after a seven-wicket win at Bognor Regis in their final game of the season on Saturday.

Luke Vinter picked up 2-53 to finish the leading wicket-taker in the division, with 61, and was second overall in the whole league, behind only Russell Jacob of Ifield, who took 67.

Captain Benn Challen blasted 96 in Littlehampton's reply to finish the season with 957 runs and was second in the division, behind Jonathan Augustus of Slinfold who struck 978. Challen was the third top scorer in the whole league. Stirlands' Sean Heather was the leading scorer with 1,065.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Littlehampton dismissed Bognor for 196 in 47.4 overs.

Max Ashmore scored 42 as Amjad Mohsin and Dan Rive both took three wickets, and Benn Challen and Vinter grabbed two apiece.

After losing Graham Blann to the second ball of their innings, brothers Gareth and Benn Challen put on a stand of more than 150, which laid the foundations for a comfortable win.

Gareth hit 69 and Benn 96 before Chris Heberlein struck 15 not out to take them to victory.

Benn said: "It was good to finish with a win and fourth place is probably a fair reflection of how we've played this season."

A brilliant run-out by Will Clark gave Arundel a seven-run win over Pagham with just two balls to spare in Division 3 West on Saturday.

Clark ran out Pagham's Dave Fuente from mid-wicket as Arundel finished the season with their fourth victory of the year.

Arundel had scored 153-9 from their 53 overs with No 10 Ian Dabinett-Jays top-scoring with 28, from just 29 balls.

Opener Joe Bain had earlier struck 24 and Clark also contributed 21.

Pagham lost wickets at regular intervals in their response and, at one stage, were 97-8 before Stuart Rutter, who top-scored with 36, and Fuente got them close.

Rutter was one of Ryan Chitty's four wickets with 13 runs needed to win, and then Clark's brilliance gave Arundel the win.

Chitty took 4-40 from 12.4 overs and his father, Neil, grabbed 3-35 off 13 overs.

Goring captain Dan Pittham was full of praise for his side after they clinched the Sussex League Division 3 West title on Saturday.

Needing 10 points to be sure of the title, Goring took 28 against Slinfold as they won for the 10th time in their 18 matches this season.

After finishing bottom of the table last year, it is a remarkable turnaround for the club and Pittham, who took over as skipper halfway through last season, said: "It's been a very good team performance all year and everyone has chipped in at some point and that's been the best thing about the year."

Slinfold won the toss on Saturday and declared on 157-9 after only 34 overs, which meant Goring took only eight bonus points and needed to reach at least 125 to get the two more points to be sure of the title.

Pittham said: "They were doing that to try to put pressure on us when we went out to bat.

"It was their best way of trying to beat us.

"But we won anyway, and I've just about recovered from the celebrations."

Matt Keen took 3-4 from two overs and Woolley and Aaron Wyatt grabbed two wickets each in Slinfold's innings, before Woolley top-scored with 51 and Gareth Cook hit 32 not out as Goring got home for the loss of five wickets.
