The star batsman, who is from the town, has signed a petition in support of the club’s proposals to build their ground at Hop Oast, and says the whole community would benefit from the new facility.

“I’ve just signed the petition in favour of the new ground after being contacted by someone on Twitter,” the Sussex vice captain said on Thursday.

“I used to watch a lot of their games growing up and my parents lived right near their old ground in Queens Street. Frank King (honorary HFC president) is also a great friend of mine so he keeps me posted with what’s going on at the club.

“I know they’ve been ground-sharing with Horsham YMCA, who I used to play for a while ago now, and that’s not been ideal for them.

“They’ve always been a successful club, I remember watching them play a great FA Cup game against Yeovil some years ago and it would be great to see them find a home again.

“I’ve seen the proposals and it looks like the whole community would benefit from it being built. Especially as there’s been a lot of negative press recently about the FA not investing enough to provide facilities for grass roots football.”
