CRICKET: Sussex sign Dilshan for t20

Sussex have signed Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan for the 2010 Friends Provident t20.

Dilshan, 33, has an abundance of talent with the bat, is an electric fielder, can keep wicket, and bowls useful off-spin.

The right-handed bat was signed by the Delhi Daredevils for the inaugural IPL in 2008 and is more recently famous for inventing an astonishing flick-shot over his head, which got the cricket world talking. The shot has become known as 'The Dilscoop' and helped him to win the award of Player-of-the-Series at the ICC World Twenty20 in 2009 - amassing 317 runs at an average of 52.38.

Dilshan has an international T20 strike rate of 129, and an average approaching 32.

Mark Robinson, Sussex's Professional Cricket Manager, said: "The recruitment of overseas players is becoming more complex as the international fixture list grows, including the possibility of staging major matches at neutral venues such as the UAE and USA.

"With Yasir Arafat likely to have Pakistan commitments and Dwayne Smith with the West Indies, the signing of one of the world's leading batsmen gives us some exciting options.

"We want our main players to have genuine matchwinning ability and we believe we have that with Dilshan, Yasir and Dwayne. With that bit of luck always required, I feel our 2010 squad can emulate our 2009 t20 success."
