CRICKET: Weekly round-up (July 25)

DESPITE an excellent performance with the ball to dismiss Ifield for 98 on Saturday, Arundel CC then slumped to defeat in Sussex League Division 3 West when they were bowled out for just 68.

Sam Dorrington (26) top-scored for Ifield after they won the toss and elected to bat, but he had little support apart from Luke Morris' 14 and 17 from Russell Jacob lower down the order.

Left-arm spinner Neil Chitty led Arundel's attack with 5-39, while Rakesh Parmar took 4-33, and with Ifield all out for 98 after 39.4 overs, Arundel may have suspected they were on for a simple victory.

That, however, was far from the truth as Jacob ripped through Arundel's batsmen to take 5-23. He was ably assisted by Pete Jones, who took 3-21 and Daniel Groves, who grabbed 2-11.

Arundel opener and captain Richard James top-scored with 32, but no other batsmen reached double figures.

James said: "There is not a lot I can say, really. We bowled and fielded well, probably the best we have this year, then batted the worst we have this year.

"It was a very disappointing result. We threw 20 points away. It's as simple as that."

Clymping captain Karl Pierce led by example as his side almost pulled off a shock win over West Sussex Invitation League Division 1 leaders Broadwater.

The match ended in a draw but Pierce felt his side should have won.

Clymping won the toss, elected to bowl, and Pierce topped the attack with 5-55 as Broadwater scored 206-9.

Bob Reynolds (36), Paul O'Sullivan (32) and Richard Iago (34) led the scores for Broadwater.

Clymping then had a real go at Broadwater with Andy Hancock (38) and Pierce (59) in the runs but they finished on 192-9.

Pierce said: "We really should have won. It was going all right until I got myself stumped, as I should have pushed on and seen the game off.

"We bowled well and they gave us a generous declaration and it produced a good game. I suppose, in the end, a draw was a fair result but it was a shame we couldn't have pushed on and won it.

"We haven't lost for seven games now, but we are still looking over our shoulder a little.

"Hopefully, we can finish the season well, and it's great to see the performances coming from across the team."

Rustington again failed to pick up a point in Division 3 when they suffered a nine-wicket defeat against Barns Green.

Rustington were all out for 89 and Green reached their target in 20 overs.

East Preston's Under-16s won their final match of the Western Area Cricket Association Bowl with a 45-run victory over Bognor.
