ARUNDEL overcame a poor start with the bat to defeat Sussex League Division 3 strugglers Goring by 135 runs.

Goring's Matt Keen bowled beautifully, taking 7-42 off 14 overs to help reduce Arundel to 44-4 at the end of 14 overs.

Will Clark (67) and Steve Mullen (54) then played extremely well to rebuild the innings and put on a century partnership.

Keen then returned to remove both the high-scoring batsmen and it was left to Harrison Temple (32) and Neil Chitty (21) to push them up to 231-9 of their 53 overs.

Arundel skipper Richard James said: "We got off to a flyer in the field with both their openers going early, and they never recovered.

"All the bowlers bowled well to very attacking fields with Harrison Temple taking 3-28, including two in two balls, Neil Chitty 3-28, Steve Mullen 2-33 and Ryan Chitty 2-7 at the death.

"Sam Botham was Goring's only batsman to make an impression, compiling a sound 42. Ally James did well with four wickets behind the stumps, two smart stumpings and a couple of catches.

"Overall, it was a very pleasing performance. We did the basics well in the field and the recovery between Steve and Will was top-class."

East Preston captain Andy Reeves is wary of their position in Division 1 of the Invitation League after a five-wicket defeat against Southwater left them sixth in what is an extremely tight table.

EP currently have 129 points but just 32 points separate them and bottom club Ram.

Reeves said: "We have Clymping next week, then Horsham Trinity. Both are clubs near us and we are targeting them for wins, it's a big couple of weeks.

"If we don't win any games and the clubs around us do, we will start to slip."

EP won the toss and batted but made just 134 in 38 overs, mainly down to Southwater captain Dan Humphreys who destroyed the order taking 7-26.

"He was getting a bit of swing but they were very straight balls and for one bowler to take seven wickets, it shows that we were a little undisciplined," added Reeves.

"With the ball, we had them at 56-3, so we could have been crawling our way back but we didn't make any further inroads until late on.

"My son Tom came on and picked up a couple of wickets to earn us another bonus point, which could turn out to be all-important at the end of the season.

"It's pleasing to keep a reasonable bowling performance up, but it was our batting that failed us this week, with the top order playing a number of silly shots."

Liam Hume (35) and Matt Lacey (31) top-scored for Southwater as they batted through to comfortably reach 138-5 after 34.3 overs.

Andy Dick managed to hit a second consecutive ton this week, but his 111 runs couldn't help Clymping to victory as they batted out a draw with Portslade in Division 1 of the Invitation League.

Portslade won the toss and inserted Clymping who made 239-7 of their 49 overs.

Clymping then also failed to bowl out their opponents, as they finished on 204-8 after 45 overs.
