ARUNDEL remain unbeaten in Sussex League Division 3 West after a draw on Saturday at Pagham.

Captain Richard James, who won the toss and elected to bowl, said: "This week's availability meant we were a bowler light but had lots of batting, so we bowled first on what looked a good wicket. The plan was to chase hard the total they set."

Pagham started well and had 46 on the board before the first wicket fell. Opener William Rolls stuck around to score 87, while Andrew Seear, with 39, and Dave Galea, who hit 38, added to the total to take Pagham to 242-6.

Neil Chitty took four wickets for 49 runs in 17 overs as he, Ian Dabinett-Jays and Ryan Chitty all bowled long-controlled spells.

Arundel set about chasing down the total in the worst possible way when they lost Ryan Chitty for a duck and Rohan Ardley for one, which left them 1-2.

However, Bradley James and father Richard James then put on 83, and Richard went on to make 74 not out.

Richard James said: "Although Pagham's score was a big total, we felt if we got off to a good start, it was possible to chase down.

"Unfortunately, we didn't. Both the Pagham opening bowlers bowled well and it wasn't until they were rested, we managed to up the rate and look more secure.

"Then came the innings of the day. Mark Barry, who hasn't had the best of starts this year, simply murdered everything. It was the cleanest hitting I have seen for a while."

Barry got 46 from 29 balls to take the pressure off and take away any chance Pagham had of winning. But Arundel could not get close enough to victory themselves, and finished on 199-7.

Craig Primmer led Pagham's bowling figures with 3-46 from 15 overs.

Clymping picked up their first win of the season in West Sussex Invitation League Division 1 with a three-wicket win over Ram, thanks to superb bowling from James Salisbury, which saw him tear through the opposition.

An in-form Salisbury picked up eight of Ram's 10 wickets, and went for just 54 runs, but he praised a whole team effort and dedicated their first win of the season to captain Karl Pierce.

He said: "It's great to get our first win of the season under our belts, and it was a real team effort with great contributions from everyone.

"It's a win we wanted for the captain as it's his first year in charge, so to get the first win is great. Hopefully, we can build on it next week."

Clymping won the toss and inserted Ram, who made 171 all out and found themselves all back in the pavilion after just 32 overs, mainly thanks to Salisbury's bowling.

Clymping then made 173-7 in 34 overs with Sam Orchard top scoring with 50 and good contributions from Paul Isted and Andy Dick.

Salisbury added: "We did fancy chasing it but, as my bowling showed, there was some life in the wicket early on so, bearing that in mind, and the fact we hadn't won a game yet, there was a little precaution.

"But Paul got into the 20s and Andy into the 30s, and with Sam scoring 50, we had some good partnerships, which helped us chase down their total."

Salisbury remained modest on his wickets, praising help from the pitch and captain Pierce, who he says he bases his bowling on.

Clymping face Felbridge on Saturday.

Rustington remain second from bottom in Division 3 after they crashed to a nine-wicket defeat at home to West Chiltington.

Rustington, who won the toss and elected to bat, were bowled out for only 83. Grant Melvin was their top-scorer with 24, while Mish Patel, who scored 10 not out, was the only other player to reach double figures.

James Chaloner took 6-27 from 13 overs for West Chiltington, and Ryan Ashley grabbed 3-37.
